Review | Leviathan Wakes | James S.A. Corey

A deadly virus threatens to wipe out humanity. A detective and a starship captain must risk everything to stop the virus and bring those who released it to justice.

What I liked ✅ vomit zombies; alien viruses . ✅ detective noir vibes . ✅ enthralling moments of sci-fi horror . ✅ unexpected moments . ✅ the two main characters contrast well in terms of their outlook on life (optimistic v pessimistic), HOWEVER...

What I didn't like ✖ ...they both had a similar skill set and characteristics; it would have served the story better to have more diverse characters . ✖ the characters were all a bit "meh"; a bit too stock-standard and unmemorable (the jaded detective, the idealistic star captain); Miller's motivations aren't convincing . ✖ it's a space opera for people who don't like space operas—lack of world-building makes the world feel not-too-memorable . ✖ at the end, the book just felt flat —a "meh" ending, characters which didn't live up to promise . Rating 3.5/5 🌟 . Genre: Space opera . Verdict: a solid read
