Review | A Court of Thorns and Roses | Sarah J. Maas

Genre

Fantasy, "young-adult"

A Court of Thorns and Roses is the first book in Sarah J. Maas' hugely popular young adult series. While marketing toward young adults, I found the explicit sex scenes anything BUT suitable those under 18 — maybe I'm just getting old, or is that what the kids are all doing these days?

What I like ✅ It's basically cocaine but for female young adult readers; a guilty pleasure read

✅ Interesting world history and societal structure

What I didn't like ✖ So many contrived and arbitrary plot devices

✖ Nothing happens in the first two-thirds of the book, it doesn't pick up until the trials

✖ Cliche characters; I wanted to see more character development

✖ Feyre's role in the book is to sit back and be seduced, or be treated as a play-thing or sex object

✖ Reads like a kinky fan-fiction for Beauty and the Beast

✖ Tamlin is as interesting as white bread — so bland

Rating 2/5 🌟 Verdict

An entertaining read, but not for young adults (mature content)

Discussion What court do you belong to? I like the sound of the Summer Court!
